Star of Alaska
Star of Alaska is named and inspired after a historical ship that now rests in the San Francisco Bay in the Maritime Museum. The ship, originally named Balclutha, has a rich story to tell; some of her cargo in the 1800's included Scotch Whisky, wool, salmon and lumber. I fantasized about her story to create my own Star of Alaska.
Star of Alaska is a fitted overcoat with a voluptuous hood. The large hood is interlined with cotton batting for extra body and it has a wide facing that folds back on itself so you can wear the hood large or more compact. The front yoke has three deer horn toggles and the remaining of the front closes with hidden snaps. There are front welt pockets and flat side hip pockets. The subtle feminine shaping is accomplished by using narrow side panels and front and back yokes. My goal was to create a classic toggle coat vibe with a Poppy von Frohlich twist.
Extra details: flannel backed satin lining for extra warmth, soft leather for the toggle tabs and deer horn toggles. I use classic tailoring techniques on the inside for a high quality polished look.
Fit details: The coat has enough ease for a mid-weight sweater underneath, mid-thigh hem length, tailored sleeves and a large hood that folds back if you prefer a compact hood.
